River flats and a busy urban centre
The Nepean River is central to Penrith's landscape. Council maintains a dedicated river and riparian vegetation program, recognising the importance of vegetation along the water. River-edge habitat is different from a garage in the urban centre, but both can create encounters when wildlife and people use adjoining spaces.
A useful home assessment looks at connections: drainage beside a fence, unmown edges adjoining open space, stored materials at a garage entrance and food that may attract rodents. A built-up location does not rule out a snake. Conversely, being near the river does not mean a sighting is inevitable.

The research dataset contains 185 snake rehabilitation records assigned to Penrith during July 2011–June 2020. These five recorded names provide local context; counts reflect reported animals, not the number living in the suburb today.
Recording effort, reporting patterns and the type of incident affect these figures. The list is not a complete species inventory or a probability of your next encounter. “Carpet Python” and other names are reproduced as recorded, without assuming a subspecies.

Where habitat and daily life meet.
Concealed ground, vegetation edges and moisture are useful things to consider. The places below explain local habitat and property situations; they are not verified current hotspots or directions to find snakes.
Nepean River corridor
An important local habitat and recreation setting. Use established paths and allow wildlife space. The river corridor is not presented here as a measured current snake hotspot.
Garden boundaries beside drainage
Where vegetation and water meet, visibility can be limited. Keep children and dogs on the clear side of the boundary and avoid investigating culverts or drain openings.
Garages, workshops and storage areas
An open roller door and quiet stored materials can create a difficult search area. A precise last-seen point is more useful than a broad request to check the whole block.

Move people away and stop work around the sighting. Do not shift a vehicle, start machinery or pull storage boxes out to reveal the animal. If you can safely prevent people from entering without approaching the snake, do so.
Tell the catcher whether it went behind shelving, under a vehicle or into a wall gap. At a workplace, nominate one person to coordinate entry and keep other staff informed. Avoid surrounding the snake with onlookers; a quieter area makes assessment easier and reduces unnecessary movement.

- Control food spillages and secure waste so rodents have fewer feeding opportunities.

- Have gaps around external doors assessed after the immediate problem is resolved.
